Intel Accelerates 14A Production Timeline

Intel 14A has been moved up the schedule, with risk production for internal products now targeted for the second half of 2027 and volume production expected in 2028. That acceleration shortens the 14A production timeline compared with earlier plans that pushed risk production into 2028 and volume output to 2029.

Intel says the 1.4-nanometer process is tracking better than 18A did at the same stage, showing improvements in defect density and transistor performance—two key indicators for chip quality and yield in chip manufacturing. Those gains are central to convincing customers to adopt Intel foundry services.

The process design kit (PDK) for 14A has reached version 0.5, and Intel expects version 0.9 to be available in October as it prepares the node for both internal designs and external customers. Progress on the PDK is an important step for designers evaluating the node.

What Intel Is Promising

  • Improved transistor density relative to previous nodes.
  • Cost and production timing that aim to make the node attractive to partners.

Intel also noted ongoing improvements across its existing lines: Intel 7, Intel 3 and 18A all exceeded internal volume targets during the quarter, and risk production of 18A-P—an enhanced 18A variant—has begun. Those wins bolster confidence but don’t guarantee success for the foundry push.

Faster timing for 14A could help Intel attract large customers; reports have linked Apple and AMD as potential collaborators, though AMD is reportedly pursuing TSMC’s A14 for Zen 7. Ultimately, delivering strong yields, securing major customer orders, and demonstrating reliable mass production will determine whether 14A becomes a true foundry success.
