Xbox’s Positron Could Win Over PlayStation Disc Fans

digitize Xbox discs

Xbox is reportedly experimenting with a feature that would let players digitize Xbox discs, linking physical copies to an Xbox account by issuing a digital license. Codenamed Positron, the program—according to reporting from The Verge—would connect Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs to a user’s profile so titles could be accessed digitally while remaining playable from their original discs.

That digital licensing could also enable supported games to be streamed via Xbox Cloud Gaming, giving players a choice between playing from the disc or from the cloud. Insiders say the process would preserve much of the traditional physical-to-digital flexibility: discs could still be bought, sold, or lent, and the license would transfer when a disc is inserted into another console and tied to that console’s Xbox account.

What insiders say about Positron and testing

Brad Rossetti, lead for the Xbox Insider program, recently tweeted that flighting on consoles was paused as the team prepared for the following week, a move some interpret as preparation for testing bigger changes like Positron. While earlier reports suggested the feature might arrive later in the year, the temporary pause in Insider flights raises the possibility Xbox Insiders could see a test build sooner rather than later.

Positron appears designed to smooth the transition from physical to digital ownership without immediately abandoning discs. For collectors who have built libraries of physical games over many years, the ability to digitize a library would mean those titles remain usable on a future disc-less console while also retaining value in the used game market.

How this could affect future hardware

It’s still unclear whether Xbox’s next-generation hardware, codenamed Project Helix, will ship with a disc drive. If Microsoft moves toward an all-digital console, a feature like Positron could be instrumental in making that shift acceptable to players who prefer physical media.

  • Preserves ownership: Physical discs could be linked to accounts without removing the ability to resell or lend.
  • Cloud access: Linked titles might be playable through Xbox Cloud Gaming where supported.
  • Compatibility limits: Not all Xbox One discs would necessarily be eligible, depending on how and when they were manufactured.
  • Hardware dependency: You’d still need an older disc-equipped console to create the digital license if a future console is disc-less.

Insiders emphasize the caveats: some Xbox One discs may not be supported by the digitization process, and the initial step requires a console with a disc drive to create the link. Still, Positron could provide a bridge for gamers and the used game market as Microsoft weighs an all-digital future.

All told, the approach would contrast with PlayStation’s move to phase out discs beginning in 2028 by offering a hybrid path that respects physical collectors while enabling cloud and digital-first play on next-gen hardware. If Xbox follows that route, the transition away from discs might feel less abrupt for many players—a bit of console-ation for the physical-media crowd.
